Congratulations on owning your own domain name! This is an exciting time, you probably spent a time trying many variations of what you originally wanted and now you have a name, but what do you do now?

The short answer is that you need to make sure the DNS or domain name system settings are pointed to your website host servers.Don’t worry, if you are still confused, I will elaborate…

If you are hosting your website at the same place you bought your domain name, you won’t have to do anything. However, if you are planning on using another location, the DNS name servers will need to be updated to the correct servers.

So the next step is to pick your website designer and/or host. If you are using a designer that provides hosting as a service, then you won’t have the locate the name servers, they will provide them to you. If you plan on being the designer, then pick the host is the next step and there should be a support section that tells you what the name server settings will be.

If your domain name provider allows for users and you choose to go with a website designer, then most of these providers will update those settings for you, so long as you grant them access to the account.

Once the DNS is updated, the change can be fast or it can take up to 72 hours for the finalization. If the website is already built, then you are done, but if the website needs to be built or migrated, this can happen on the production domain.

I hope this information was helpful, if you would like more information about DNS or domain names, please go to the contact page and submit a request.
